EMT Sponsorship Applications

Sponsorship for the EMT-B

To practice as an EMT you must be licensed, and to be licensed you must have a sponsoring agency. The King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is an approved sponsoring agency for EMTs.

KCSO requires that all registered emergency workers must provide 16 hours of mission time per year. RAD duty and special community sponsored events that use KCSO SAR EMTs will count as mission time. KCSO recognizes the practical applications of EMT skills are perishable; separate from the knowledge component. As an EMT it is important that you are able to demonstrate your ability to perform in the field. Having a 16 hour mission requirement will assist members in being able to stay current and confident in their ability to perform as an EMT within SAR.

If you are a SAR member who wants to become an EMT:

KCSO and KCSARA do not impose a "waiting period" for sponsorship for EMT class, however the King County Department of Health does require applicants for the EMT class to have been with their agency for at least six months. SAR Units are advised of the KC EMS class schedule, so if you are interested in applying for the next county sponsored class, please contact your unit training director for more information.

Pre-requisites for acceptance into the Basic EMT (EMT-B) class are:

  1. High School Graduate or G.E.D.
  2. At least 18 years of age at the start of the course.
  3. Healthcare Provider CPR endorsement. The DOT EMT Curriculum requires that applicants be CPR certified prior to beginning an EMT course.
  4. You must have the physical strength to perform the normal functions of an EMT.
  5. Six months minimum with sponsoring EMS agency or a full time career position.

If you are a SAR member who has already taken an EMT course:

In order to practice as an EMT in King County you need to have your license sponsored. Whether you took your EMT class through the Department of Health or one of the community or technical colleges, you will need to obtain sponsorship by completing the Initial Application. All EMTs in SAR need to list KCSO as an EMS Agency in order to provide care at the EMT-B care provider level while on SAR missions. If you are currently affiliated with another EMS agency you will need to fill out the Personal Status Change form to add KCSO as one of your agency affiliations. You can do this online or by filing out the paper version and mailing it.
